The Penny Farthing is named in honour of Berkhamsted's Thomas Stevens, who in the mid 1800s was the first man to cycle around the world on a pennyfarthing bicycle. Dating back to the 16th-century, the hotel was originally a stopover for pilgrims heading for Ashridge monastery.
